The new test is divided into 2 parts, or Modules, imaginatively called Mod 1 and Mod2!
Mod 1 is a manoeuvres test and takes around 15 mins, it takes place in an off-road environment and it has to be passed before Mod 2 which is the on-road part of the test and takes around 40 mins.
Mod1
You will need to demonstrate that you can control your bike when pushing it manually backwards (like when you get it out of your garage!).
Then you need to ride in a slalom and two times round in a figure of 8, around cones.
You will also have to ride it safely at higher speeds (50kmh, 32mph) and perform an avoidance manoeuvre (that's a swerve!) and an emergency stop excercise.
There is a U turn to do and a slow ride in a straight line (imagine you're in slow moving traffic)
We will train you to do all these elements safely in our yard, so there will be no surprises on test day.
Mod 2
The DSA examiner will follow you on the road giving you directions via radio link, on various roads and traffic conditions. You will be asked to perform a couple of manoeuvers on the road which we will cover during your training. You will be expected to make good progress during your ride (get up to the speed limit where appropriate!), in a confident, competent and above all, be safe!
CBT - Compulsory basic training, DAS - Direct access scheme, bike test
